Understanding Your Options

What Is This Service?

Day Supports Individual (DSI) gives a person individual staff help during approved daytime activities outside their home. The person practices skills that matter in daily life.

Who May Qualify?

Innovations members may request DSI when medical, physical, or behavioral needs show why individual support is needed. The health plan needs records supporting that request. Approval depends on the person’s needs, funding rules, and a suitable program.

What Could a Day Include?

Examples include practicing communication, making choices, learning daily routines, social activities, and community participation. Activities should match the person’s interests and approved goals.

What Staff Help Will Be Available?

Discuss the individual help needed for communication, movement, personal care, or behavior. Ask what staffing has been approved for each part of the day.

Can We Use the Empowerment Center?

Ask about WNC Direct Care’s Asheville Empowerment Center, openings, transportation, and the program schedule. For students, coordinate with the school; day services do not replace the school’s responsibilities.

How Do We Get Started?

Call WNC Direct Care and the care manager—the person who helps arrange services. Describe the help needed on a typical day. Ask for an assessment, a written service decision, and help finding an available provider. Share the support plan and care information. Confirm the approved schedule before attendance.
